Title: International Christian Maritime Association Extends Support to Seafarers Affected by Crisis in the Red Sea

[London, 22 January 2024] – The International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA), representing 27 seafarers’ welfare charities whose members are present in over 700 ports and online, expresses deep concern for the safety and well-being of seafarers amidst ongoing threats and escalating conflict in the Red Sea region.

The welfare of seafarers and supply chain disruptions worldwide are likely to become more dire if the freedom of navigation cannot be guaranteed or enforced by countries which uphold this freedom. We condemn the attacks on international merchant shipping that are threatening seafarers.

The Galaxy Leader Incident:

ICMA urges coordinated efforts to secure the release of the crew of the Galaxy Leader, a vessel caught in the midst of this crisis. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected seafarers and their families during this challenging time.

Information Sharing for Safe Navigation:

Recognizing the paramount importance of information in ensuring the safety of seafarers, ICMA advocates for increased information sharing to facilitate prudent decision-making for vessels transiting the area or considering diversion. The availability of accurate and timely information is crucial and can significantly impact the health and well-being of the crew.

Addressing Mental Health Concerns:

ICMA expresses deep concern regarding the added stress and mental health challenges faced by seafarers due to the prevailing circumstances. We call upon shipping companies to take additional measures to ensure that seafarers have access to online resources or support services at the next available port to address their mental health needs.

Quotes from ICMA Leadership:

Sara Baade, Chair of ICMA and CEO of Sailors’ Society, notes, “Seafarers did not sign up to be shot at. Any seafarer approaching the Red Sea today is going to be extremely anxious and diverting around the Horn of Africa instead brings its own challenges. At the very least they will be delayed returning home to loved ones who they have already been separated from for many months.”

Dr. Jason Zuidema, General Secretary, ICMA, adds, “ICMA has a diverse network of members with a significant presence across numerous ports in the region. Some members have pioneered invaluable mental health guidance and others offer round-the-clock online support. Whether in-person or through digital channels, our members remain unwavering in their commitment to seafarers, particularly during challenging times such as these.”

ICMA’s Commitment:

ICMA and its member organizations are fully prepared to provide resources and support to seafarers affected by this crisis. We stand ready to assist in any way possible and remain committed to the welfare and safety of seafarers worldwide.
